Your Guide to Crafting a Simple Yet Elegant Bow By Hand
One of the most delightful aspects of the Really Simple Ribbon Bow? You don’t need a magical wand or a crafting wand, for that matter. This isn’t a spell reserved for the crafting elite – it’s a down-to-earth, straightforward technique that doesn’t require a degree in arts and crafts. All you need is a ribbon, a pair of willing hands, and a dash of enthusiasm.
Now, let’s talk about tools. Or rather, the lack thereof. The Really Simple Ribbon Bow scoffs at the notion of fancy crafting gadgets and intricate contraptions. No need to scour the depths of your craft room for that elusive tool you only vaguely remember buying. Grab a roll of ribbon, find a comfy spot, and let your fingers work their crafting magic.
Whether you’re a crafting prodigy or a first-time glue gun user, this bow is your crafting ally—no need to fret about intricate instructions or convoluted techniques. The steps are so straightforward that even your neighbor’s cat, with a little ribbon tied around its paws, could pull it off.
Directions
- Start by cutting a dovetail, or V cut, in your ribbon and measuring your first tail. I chose to make mine 12”-16” for a nice tail with a lot of movement. At the 12” mark, hold your ribbon tightly and create a twist by twisting your right hand backward and your left hand forward. Hold that twist between your thumb and forefinger. This twist will keep that beautiful front of your ribbon facing out.
- Create your first loop, as big as you’d like it. I decided to make mine about 6”. When your loop is created, twist your ribbon like you did earlier, then hold that loop with your same thumb and forefinger.
- Repeat these steps to create 3 more loops, one symmetrical to your first, then another pair in front of the first. You’ll end up with 4 loops, 2 on each side of your center. Add 2 more loops, a couple inches shorter than your others, to add some dimension. Mine are about 4”.
- Grab your cable tie, and wrap it around the center of your bow. Tighten it lightly and pull it to the back of your bow, then tighten it the rest of the way. This will keep the bow together and is how you will attach your bow to your tree, wreath, or whatever project you are working on.
- Cut your second tail. I cut mine to match the first. Cut a little piece of your same ribbon and fold it on itself. Then wrap this around the center of your bow and tie it in a knot. This will cover your cable tie!
- Floof your loops and arrange your loops and tails as you’d like them to lay, and you’re ready to go!

TIPS AND TRICKS
- Change your ribbons to make bows that match whatever type of decor you are creating. Make a smaller version for a wreath or swag. Add multiple smaller bows to your project. Let the versatility of this fun bow shine!
- I used a wide ribbon for this bow, a 2”wire-edged ribbon, and I think that works best. But you are free to use this same bow with any type of ribbon you’d like to match your wreath. Your bow will be more floppy if you use a ribbon that is not wire-edged.
- If you’d rather use wire to secure your bow, 18 gauge wire is perfect for this.
