‘Tis the time of year when bows become the unsung heroes of holiday décor, and we’re here to celebrate that fact. Join us on this ribbon-filled adventure as we dive into the art of crafting a Christmas bow using a bow maker. With the rhythmic dance of three different ribbons, we’re turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. Whether you’re adorning your tree, wrapping gifts, or decorating your home, this bow is about to become the star of your festive show.

Directions

  • Start by dovetailing your first tail by cutting a V in the end of your first ribbon. I decided to start with a fun, red and white stripe ribbon.
I made my first tail about 8” long. Put your ribbon in between the pegs on your bow maker, and give it a nice twist.
  • Make your first loop by guiding your ribbon out, then back to the center pegs, adding a twist between the pegs by twisting your right hand forward and your left hand back. I made my loops 7”. Repeat this step to make a matching loop on the other side.
Follow the same steps to create 4 loops, 2 on each side.
  • One of your tails will go up, one will go down. Measure and cut your second tail at 8” to match your other. Cut a dovetail in the second tail.
Add your second ribbon, and follow the steps above to create a second bow on top of the first. These tails should be about 7” and the loops should be about 6”. I created 6 loops with this second ribbon, 3 loops on each side.
  • Now add your last ribbon, and follow the same steps to create a third bow on top of the other two. These tails should be about 6” and the loops should be about 5”. I created 4 loops again with this third ribbon, 2 loops on each side.
  • To finish off your bow, create a “bow tie” by looping a small piece of your first ribbon on itself, then pushing it in between the pegs on your bow maker. This will create two loops without any tails.
  • Run your cable tie behind the ribbon between the pegs, loosely tighten it, then carefully pull it up and off your bow maker.
  • Rotate the tail of your cable tie to the back of the bow, add a cable tie through the first cable tie to help you attach the bow to your wreath or project, and tighten it as tight as you can.
  • Take a little strip of your ribbon (I chose the brown striped ribbon) and wrap it around the center of your bow to cover the cable tie, securely tie it in the back, then fluff your bow, and you’re done!

TIPS AND TRICKS

  • A cable tie works really well for bows because it helps when you are fluffing the bows up. If you’d rather use wire than a cable tie, 18 gauge works perfect for bows.
  • Make the bow your own! If you’d like more loops, add them. You can follow the same steps to create as many loops as you’d like.
  • Switch up your ribbons to create some unique looks, if you’d like. I think that wire-edged ribbons work best, but you can try a variety of sizes and patterns. This will switch up the way your bow looks and can help it match your wreath perfectly!

How do I attach my bow to my wreath?

Attaching your festive Christmas bow to your wreath is a breeze! Once you’ve crafted the bow using the bow maker and combined the three different ribbons into a stunning masterpiece, grab a piece of floral wire. Secure one end of the wire around the knot or center of the bow, leaving enough length to wrap around the wreath frame. Position the bow where you want it on the wreath, making sure it enhances the overall design. Wrap the floral wire tightly around the wreath frame, securing the bow in place. For an extra touch, you can fluff and adjust the bow loops to achieve the perfect look. In just a few simple steps, your Christmas bow will be beautifully adorning your wreath, spreading holiday cheer for all to see!

Can I use more than one bow on my wreath?

Absolutely! You can definitely use more than one bow to add extra festive flair to your wreath. Mixing and matching bows can create a dynamic and eye-catching display. Consider using bows of different sizes, colors, or patterns to add dimension and interest to your wreath. You can place them side by side, stack them, or position them at different points around the wreath for a balanced and visually appealing look. The key is to experiment and find a combination that suits your style and complements the overall theme of your holiday décor. So, don’t be afraid to get creative and double up on the bows to make your wreath even merrier!
