How to Add a Hanger to a Grapevine Wreath

March 22, 2025 | Wreaths, Year-Round Designs

When creating a wreath—especially one you plan to sell—it’s important to make sure it’s displayed exactly how you designed it. A beautifully balanced wreath can lose its impact if it hangs crooked or off-center. The easiest way to guarantee your design looks just right is to add a built-in hanger. This simple step ensures your wreath is showcased properly and makes it easier for your customer to hang it with confidence.

What to Use as a Hanger for a Grapevine

I like to use 18 gauge paper wrapped wire for my wreath hangers. You do not have to use paper wire, but I like that extra protection it gives to prevent scratches. Other options to use would be 22-26 gauge floral wire, ribbon, jute twine or burlap string. I like the the 18 gauge paper wrapped for its durability and finished look.

Where to Put Your Hanger on the Grapevine

I like to check out the grapevine that I will be using. Look for symmetry and bald areas. The first thing I need to do is decide where I want to put the hanger. By figuring out what parts will be hidden in the design versus what part will be exposed, I can determine where I want my hanger for the best visuals of my design.

Once I have the center chosen, I put the wire through several pieces of grapevine from bottom of the top of the grapevine. One I have an upside down U, I pull the wire through the grapevine, back up to the upside U and wrap it around the wire to get a good, tight hold.

It is important to leave enough of an opening in your U so the wreath can be carried but the handle. This large hanger is great for carrying, storing and displaying. You never want to have a hanger that is to small to fit on your customers hanger. Also, be sure to wrape those end wires tightly around for a super secure hold.
