How to Change or Add a Bow to Match Your Wreath Style

April 3, 2025 | Tips

Ever had an embellishment that just wasn’t quite right… and then you realized—it’s something you can change? 🎀 Yep, it happens to all of us! Whether you’re updating a seasonal design or want your wreath to match your current aesthetic, changing or adding a detail can make all the difference.

Here’s how I think about it when I’m designing in the studio or reworking something for a customer:

🎯 Start With the Mood of the Design

Ask yourself—what vibe are you going for? Soft and sweet? Bright and playful? Elegant and refined?

Your bow should talk to the design. For example:

  • Pastels & neutrals pair well with sheer, organza, or lace-style ribbons.
  • Bold florals might call for wired ribbon with strong patterns or textures.
  • Rustic or farmhouse looks do great with burlap, plaids, or ticking stripes.

🧵 Ribbon Width & Layering Tricks

If your bow looks too small or feels out of balance, try layering!

  • Start with a wider base ribbon (2.5”)
  • Add 1.5” ribbons on top for contrast or detail
  • Try mixing different finishes—like satin with canvas or glitter with burlap

Pro Tip: Odd numbers of ribbon types usually look more balanced and designer-inspired.

🪄 How to Swap Out a Bow (Without Wrecking Your Design)

If your wreath already has a bow and you want to replace it:

  1. Gently remove the old bow by cutting the wire or floral pick
  2. Take note of where it was placed—sometimes that spot just works!
  3. Create your new bow using coordinating ribbon that matches or complements your florals
  4. Attach it using floral wire or a pipe cleaner, and fluff it like crazy

Sometimes just changing the bow makes an old wreath feel brand new!

💡 Use Bows to Tie Your Decor Together

Literally! If you’re styling a wreath for your front door and want the whole entryway to feel cohesive, try using the same ribbon from your wreath on a lantern, a mailbox topper, or a planter. It’s a little touch that makes your whole setup feel intentional.
